D STAR

I recently picked up a used rig with D STAR, I am about 30 miles from a gateway. What are the pro's or con's, Anyone here use it?. I just set the rig up but I have not attempted D STAR yet, and frankly I don't know anybody who uses it to ask their opinion of it.
