Hammarlund HQ 180A troubles.

Post by K0ST »

I recently purchased an HQ 180A receiver. It works perfectly on the lower 3 bands up to 4 mhz. All of the bands above 4 mhz are dead. There is some noise but no reception, It does not even receive the 100kc callibrator on these bands. I probably will be able to find the problem at some point but I thought maybe somebody with HQ 180 experience and technical ability would have some ideas where is the most likely place to start looking for the problem.

From memory, (it's a good few years since I've worked on one) the HQ180 is dual conversion above 4MHz or so. It sounds as if the second conversion isn't working, or is a long way off frequency. I can't remember if it's a crystal or not on 3490kHz. Another possibility is that the 3035kHz crystal in the filter is dead. If I recall correctly, the second converter is a 6BE6 which acts as IF amplifier on the lower bands, so the tube is probably OK, but it's worth swapping it.
