As I understand, it actually means "Continuous" , not Contintental. AKA :Lower 48" Alaska of course is on the same Continent .

Actually, it is "Contiguous":
1. Sharing an edge or boundary; touching.
2. Neighboring; adjacent.
3a. Connecting without a break: the 48 contiguous states.
3b. Connected in time; uninterrupted: served two contiguous terms in office.

Yep, I did a search right after I posted too. I had heard the term used before but figured "continuous" would play well because that is how most of the people tend to say it...HI
