Do portable satellite phones work everywhere in the world? or only within the satellite footprints? would it be useful to take one on a long, trans-oceanic yacht trip, or would there be too many dead zones with no signal? Anyone know a good one, and how much call charges are?

1. They work well.
2. They are extremely expensive to purchase AND to use.
Iridium, Globalstar, and KVH come to mind as suppliers. There are some rental options, too. That might be a way to save a few $ if you only need it for a single voyage. Marine HF, amateur HF, and of course, VHF are also options for emergencies or to stay in touch.
