AA4R imposter?

Post by VE9ASN »

I have a want ad up for a Ten Tec 238-C
I was emailed from "William" privately, and I can not find him on here anywhere.
He sent an out of focus pic of a tuner.
I asked for some identification with the tuner in the pic.
He sent an obviously poor photoshop of "his" card from QRZ pasted on the previous pic.
He will only accept etransfer.
I am curious if I am being paranoid, or if my concerns are legitimate?
Thanks and 73, VE9ASN,
Les.

No - you are not being paranoid. A scammer has "appropriated" AA4R and is using it to scam. N7MSR reported the same call being used for one of his WTB ads on the Scammer section of the QTH Forum - the M.O. will no doubt be the same.

Just got a reply to a want ad I have up from this one as well. I engaged him for a minute, told him I only wanted to send a MO to his address, which of course he declined (Paypal friends and family only), then I ultimately sent this:

That’s ok, I just needed to engage you just long enough to get through your connections and determine the mac address of your router and end device. Meanwhile, we tapped Gmail to monitor login traffic on the account and provide us the logs. If you don’t think we geofenced you, get ready. Here we come.

I have a feeling he will move on to someone else's call now.

That is excellent, hopefully it will slow them down.
I just sent a message about a tuner to an ad placed by N4FUX, same tuner I was seeking.....
Too good to be true, or the real deal? I'm somewhat concerned now!

Yes, I wish I had looked before I leaped. Had WTB Heathkit SB-650. Sent pic and then I sent money through pay pal. Says he is William C Parris. No reply or item received. Expensive lesson. Live and learn.

Have people working on this guys IP address. They think they located him. Will be turning this over to authorities when verified.
