How Much Power?

Post by w6tls »

I'm considering adding an amp to my Yaesu FTDX10 but my antenna is only rated for 250 watts. Is going from 100w to 250w worth the expense?

No. It's not worth it at all. You will get a 3 db gain for lots of money invested in the HF amp. That's only 1/2 of a S unit increase. Most people will not
pick up on the little gain.
Your next step up from 100 watts is to 400 watts. That's an S unit. There's some neat little amps out there that are designed to run 500 watts.
Solid state? Elecraft KPA 500. I have one and love it. Next is a tube amp. Ameritron AL811H. Reasonable in price. Other good amps to look at are the
used Ameritron AL80A and the Heath Kit SB 1000.
Stay away from the Heathkit SB200. It uses two each 572 tubes which is not a problem if they work. But, those tubes lay horizontal and the manufactures of today do not design those tube to be laid on their side. There lies the problem, tube replacement.

Saving your money, with what you have you can increase your talk power by making changes to your audio by setting up the equalizer and also using the RF speech processor.
