Kenwood TS-440 to KAM tnc interface

Greetings,
I am using a BUXCOMM cable to interface the KAM unit to the 13 pin accessory plug in the Kenwood TS-440. As supplied, the cable has a diode between ping 13 (PTT) to pin 9 (mute); oriented cathode to pin 13.
The KAM works as it should, but the Kenwood mike is allways muted. The only way I can use the mike is to unplug the 13 pin connector. Is there a way use the mike without having to unplug the cable, short of using relays or some other complicated solution?
