shipping cost analysis

shipping over size. as in verticle antenna parts.
I packed gap antenna in 3 inch pvc pipe. 105 inches long.
taped to one end was a 26 x 3 x 12 box. total weight about 30 .
UPS price at store was $92 to california.
checked web at ups and fedex and Dhl. fedex $ 68 and DHL $46.
by freight truck $146.
I split the box off the pvc tube and re weighed. combo price still about the same for UPS and FEDEX> but DHL was $37 for the tube and $8 for the box.
When i got to DHL, suprise. Tube was only $20 and the box $8.
whew................
moral.. first dont even think of shipping long antenna pieces. or ship the long pieces seperately in PVC pipe. dont add any short pieces untill you have verified the weight tradeoffs and size trade offs. I found out 105x5x5 and 105x5x7 are the same price...
