I drove a sizable distance (4hours) to purchase alot of radios from an amateur recently. His add #365834 :
Selling Out: Hammarlund HQ 170 - Excellent Condition
National 300 - Excellent Condition
National 173 - Good Condition
Hallicrafters S-27 - Good Condition
Clarke Signal Corp. Receiver - Good Condition
Tektronix Model 852 Dual Trace Scope - Good Operational
ALL MUST GO: Make Offer on all - cash only (money order) etc...
I was assured all radios worked and that they were in the conition described. I arrived to find that the National 173 in "good condition" was missing many knobs from the front. The Hallicrafters S27 had replaced knobs from the original. After driving the distance I did I decided to purchase the radios reguardless- That was my fault and of my own free will I admit.
I arrived home and inspected the radios more closely than the back seat of a vehicle to find no bottom cover on the NC173 and that the HQ-170, and S27 were repaints. Upon further assesment of the units contacted the seller KB8QKE - Dave explaining my situation and asked if he would consider a partial or full refund. His excuse was I didn't HAVE to buy them ( I agree but did assuming the best) and I signed his "sales contract" which included he had tested the radios recently on his long wire antennas and all were in the condition described and... AS-IS cash only. I made some mistakes in this transaction and the choice was ultimately mine but ....
Make a long story short, one of the radios (S27) doesnt even work and after driving 4 hours I find myself with a pile of scrap.
Basically, If you are thinking of dealing with this fellow ( or anyone) be sure you check extreemly thouroughly what you are buying. If you think a radio in "excellent" condition should have all the knobs , original paint, or even work; dont trust his rating scale.
Just letting all other hams know of my experience,
Keith
