TS-930S Tuning dial slips
TS-930S Tuning dial slips
I bought a used TS930S that works well except that the tuning dial seems to slip. Not all the time, just some time. Sometime if I just want to tune a few hundred hertz I may have to turn the tuning knob 1/2 revelation or more. Any suggestions what the problem might be? Thanks.
TS-930
Greetings. KE5KDT here. I understand that this has an optical dial like my VFO-230 does. My VFO has two optical sensors and a large disc connected to the tuning dial that has small slots around the circumference. AS you turn the dial the optical sender/receiver interprets the rotation and speed. On my VFO I would have to spin the heck out of it to get it to change the display just a little and it only went up not down in freq. I got inside and noticed that there were two adjustable slugs/coils and I started playing with them a bit at a time until I got it to work correctly. If the TS-930 is the same then you might want to start making some very small adjustments on those coils to see if you can get it to start behaving.

P.S. That's a beautiful Stearman model on your .com page!

Al, Yes, my 930 tunes perfectly now. Clif, KA5IPF (the resident TS-930 Yahoo

not have a scope I went with Method 1. It’s real easy. I didn’t have to
remove the top cover; just the bottom. You shouldn’t have any trouble.
Method 1:
Covers off, radio upside down, and VFO knob pointing to your bellybutton.
Directly behind the VFO knob is a small circuit board mounted horizontally.
This is not the main board but a little one mounted to the front panel.
In the back left corner of it are 2 small pots. There are also holes in the
PCB to adjust them.
Carefully note the position of each, give a few back and forth motions, and
reset to the original position.
Method 2:
To use a 'scope I usually connect to ME1 and ME2 (Main Encoder 1 & 2) on the
Digital unit but you can pick up the signals on the small board.
The pots are adjusted for a square wave with a 50% duty cycle. One pot each
for ME1 & 2.
It takes longer to talk about it than it does to do it.
Good luck. Bob, W4BCD
