TS-830S Mode Switch Problem

Hey everybody:

Just wondering if I am on the right track before I pull the covers off my TS-830 gold label series. A few days ago I turned on the rig and the display would not come on. I was on 20 meter the night before, so the mode was set to USB of course. I switched the mode switch to tune,cw and nothing happened. I then put it to the LSB setting and the display came back on. I switched it back to USB and the display stayed on. Used the rig and everything seemed fine with the loading of it and the output is where it should be with good audio reports. I turned off the rig for the night, and came back the next day to the same thing. So I did the same thing again and the display came back on .
Today I turned the rig on and the same thing happened again, but this time the trick did not work  . The rig will only show display in the LSB function. I was wondering if it might be a dirty switch or something to do with the switch?
Any help would be great. I am willing to attempt some small repairs, any thing after that and I have a good tech in the area. Instead of bothering him right away, I thought I would try here first.
Thanks again Don VE3GNX :D

This same problem has happened with the ts940s. It is most likely the battery, or a faulty processor socket. This was cured in the 940 by removing the processor socket and soldering the processor directly to the board. Fortunately, for the 940, there was instructions posted on the web how to do this. Often, leaving the rig off for extended periods of time, the battery will go bad. Why don't you just leave the rig on for several days before turning it off again. Then see what happens. Anyhow, a battery generally only lasts for about 5 years.
