G5RV + IC-746 Tuner Compatibality?

G5RV + IC-746 Tuner Compatibality?

I just threw up a wire dipole g5rv and the Icom will only tune it on 40 meters. :? Is this common? Is it advisable to use an external antenna tuner? Thanks for the help

Is it a full sized or half sized G5RV? Actually it should tune 20 meters. But there are different variations of how it is installed or if it uses twin lead or ladder line. I know when i had mine up i used a outboard tuner and even then it was difficult to get a good match on 15,17 and 10 meters.Also less i forget the recommended coax lenght from the twin or ladder line is 70 ft. I just read on the web that a guy cut 8 inches off of both wires and got good matches every where..
